The Denver Broncos activated Brawley native Mike Mohamed early Saturday and he will be on the field when the Broncos host the Oakland Raiders today.
Today’s game marks the end of a quick and somewhat strange odyssey that had Mohamed spend the pre-season with Denver, then sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars before returning to Denver on Wednesday.
“I started with Denver but was released after camp and I had strained my hamstring and that definitely hurt me,” said Mohamed, who was drafted by the Broncos in the sixth round of the 2011 NFL Draft after playing at Cal.
“I had a week off to get healthy and get everything right,” Mohamed said. “Then Jacksonville called and I went there for two weeks under contract on the reserve squad … it was a good experience, the weather was hot and humid but I liked the team and the atmosphere.”
Jacksonville and Mohamed parted ways on Tuesday, opening the door for the Broncos, who were looking for depth at linebacker and special teams. Being familiar with him, they re-signed him.
“Denver called and wanted to sign me to the practice squad and said they might activate me,” Mohamed said. “I think that having been here for two years definitely helped, knowing the defense so there is no learning curve, helped my cause and I know for a lot of teams character is a big issue and not having any issues helps your case.”
Mohamed is projected to see action with the Broncos’ special teams units and will be ready to play linebacker.
“I’m looking forward to playing (today) … I’m starting on three special teams,” Mohamed said. “As far as linebacker goes, you never know … you have to stay ready, you’re always just one play away from being in the game.”
Mohamed will be sporting a new jersey with Denver, No. 47, after previously wearing No. 53.
“It was one of the only numbers left that fits a linebacker,” said Mohamed who wore number 18 at Cal and at Brawley Union High.
Already seeing his season start as a roller-coaster ride, Mohamed is just staying positive about his professional career.
“I’m taking it a day at a time, nothings promised,” Mohamed said. “It’s tough and you need a good attitude but when something like this opportunity happens, it’s worth it.”
