With a goal in the last minute of the championship game of the third annual Press Fest Soccer Tournament, the Imperial Valley Auto Mall took home the championship.
The team, sponsored by Desert and Direct Auto Plaza at the Imperial Valley Auto Mall, beat last year’s champion, Rosco’s Auto Body Shop, 1-0, for the title.
It was a mixed-feelings victory for IVAM team captain Michael Navarro, who played with Rosco’s team last season.
“It was bittersweet,” Navarro said. “I played with them last year and I played against them in the finals. … I’m happy but kind of sad ’cause we played them.”
Rosco’s Auto Body Shop owner and head coach Ramon Lopez was hoping to repeat as champions.
“It went not quite what we expected. Obviously we wanted to win it again,” Lopez said. “We had a lot of fun and I’m looking forward to being a part of it next year.”
IVAM won Pool A with three wins to advance to the semifinal where it beat Lee Tire, 4-1.
Rosco’s won Pool B with three wins and beat Community Valley Bank, 3-2, in the semifinal match.
