Of all the great distance runners produced by UAA in recent years, Micah Chelimo accomplished what none before him could.  And that's winning an individual NCAA Division II title.  Chelimo, who was a junior in the spring of 2012, entered the finals of the NCAA 5,000 meter race as a slight underdog, but came from behind on the final lap to prevail in windy conditions with a time of 15 minutes, 15 point 8 seconds.  Chelimo's effort helped the Seawolf men finish a program best 9th as a team at NCAA championships.  It was only the second NCAA individual track and field title for a UAA athlete, after David Registe's long jump win in 2008.  That alone would have been enough to place Chelimo in the top 10 of this list.  However, in the fall, he added another title in the Division II 10 kilometer cross country race.  Now a senior, Chelimo broke the tape at the NCAA meet with a winning time of 28 minutes, 56 point 6 seconds, prevailing by more than 15 seconds over the runner-up.  He still has another season of track and field eligibility to build on his legendary status.
