ANCHORAGE, Alaska—
Football is all about proving oneself. At Bartlett High School, a fresh bunch of Golden Bears are out to create their own identity -- and they’ve done so in their four games this season.Bartlett is 3 and 1 in its defense of the large-schools state title won by last year's senior-heavy team. Coach John Jessen's bear cubs have grown up in a hurry, shaking off a Week 2 loss to South by defeating East and Eagle River back-to-back.
In those games, Bartlett accumulated 676 yards on the ground -- success that will be difficult to maintain in Week 5’s Anchorage Football Stadium game at 7 p.m. Friday against the Dimond Lynx, who have allowed fewer than two touchdowns per game.
“I think we all complement each other well: Trent and Keenan are the fast, small ones, and I just complement them -- I go off of their energy,” said Bartlett’s Mark Cox, who has accumulated 251 rushing yards in the last two weeks.
“They just hang in there and they're pretty stingy on defense -- I say every game in my career, we have to block,” Jessen said. “If we can we'll be able to move the ball, and if we can't we'll be in for a long night.”
