Tyler Kornfield of Anchorage, who attends the University of Alaska Fairbanks, raced to a third-place finish in Tuesday's opening race, a freestyle sprint, at the U.S. National Cross Country Skiing championships in Rumsford, Maine. Kornfield finished behind winner Torin Koos and Dakota Blackhorse von Jess. APU skier Lars Flora claimed fifth place.
Other Alaska-connected skiers also performed well on day one. Fairbanks products David Norris and Reese Hanneman took eighth and ninth, respectively, while APU's Kate Fitzgerald claimed 11th in the women's sprint.
Action at the national championships resumes on Thursday, as the ladies race 10K and the men go 15K.
