Repeating in the only running event final contested on Friday was Claire Trujillo of Grace Christian. Trujillo won the girls 1-2-3A 3200 meter race in 11:29.06.

The title is the first for the Eagles girls program. Darlene Bunts sank her only field goal, a baseline layup with 28 seconds left in the third overtime to give CIA the lead for good. At the end of the first overtime, Nikolaevsk's Kayla Stafford was fouled shooting a jumper at the buzzer and could have given the Warriors the title, but she made one of two from the free throw line, sending the game to a second overtime period, tied at 39.

Fast Trail Produces New Tour of Anchorage Winners

Brent Knight claimed his first Tour of Anchorage 50K ski race title on Sunday, in a men's record time of 2 hours, 4 minutes, 41 seconds. Knight came in third last year in the endurance race that takes skiers through the Anchorage trail system from Service High School to Kincaid Park. The previous record was co-held by brothers Lars and Erik Flora. Lars posted a mark of 2:06:12 in 2000, and Erik matched it with a title in 2005.

Colton Beck scored nine seconds into regulation and the UAF Nanooks never looked back in a 3-1 win over the UAA Seawolves to cap off a two games to none sweep in the annual Governor's Cup series. Andy Taranto scored twice for the Nanooks, who have now captured the last four Governor's Cup titles and nine out of the last 12.

Seawolf Women Triumph Over UAF Again

Down 37-15 in the first half, and still trailing by 10 with five and a half minutes to go, the UAA men's basketball team pulled out a potentially season-saving win, 71-69 on Saturday night against Montana State-Billings. The Seawolves finish the regular season 11 and 7 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, and prevent the Yellowjackets from tying them for third in the final conference standings.

Former Palmer High School football standout Junior Aumavae has gotten his foot in the door with the NFL again. Aumavae, a 6'2", 310 pound defensive tackle, has signed a contract with the New York Jets. The team did not disclose details of the transaction.

Iditarod Start Order Announced

The 66 mushers competing in Iditarod XLI drew for start positions at Thursday night's start banquet. Six past champions are in the race, including defending champion Dallas Seavey. His father, 2004 champion Mitch Seavey is also entered in the race, as are four-time winners Martin Buser, Jeff King, and Lance Mackey, plus 2011 winner and record holder John Baker. The ceremonial start begins at 10am Saturday on 4th Avenue in downtown Anchorage.

Aces Pummel Condors With First Period Flurry

The Alaska Aces scored four first period goals, two by former Bakersfield Condor Alex Hudson, in a 5-1 series opening win over the Condors on Thursday night at Sullivan Arena. Hudson was acquired by Alaska in a trade in January and now has eight goals on the season.

UAA Men Fall At 4th-Ranked Falcons

For the second time in less than a week, the UAA men's basketball team fell to a top five Division II opponent, falling 59-56 at #4 Seattle Pacific on Thursday night. The loss drops UAA to 10-7 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and could be damaging to the Seawolves NCAA tournament hopes. UAA came into the week ranked 9th in the latest west region poll. Eight teams advance to the postseason.

Arleigh Reynolds of Salcha stated on Saturday that if he were to win his first Fur Rendezvous Open World Championship sled dog race, it would be the biggest professional accomplishment of his life. On Sunday, he delivered, capturing the title in the three day cumulative race through the streets and trails of Anchorage.

Kikkan & Partner Secure World Championship Gold

Kikkan Randall of Anchorage and partner Jessie Diggins of Afton, Minnesota combined to give the United States its first gold medal in a World Championship nordic ski competition on Sunday, skiing to the victory in the team sprint title in Val Di Fiemme, Italy. Randall and Diggins had previously teamed up for a win in a World Cup race earlier this season in Quebec City.

Entering the week holding the eighth and final position in the all-important west region rankings, the UAA men's basketball team knew it could ill afford a loss to Simon Fraser, the last place team in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
