50 years ago
— Boyne City and Charlevoix opened new gyms with basketball victories. Boyne City defeated East Jordan, 57-32, led by Doug Grubbe with 17 points. Charlevoix upended Mancelona, 39-39, led by John Pearl with 14 points.
— Pellston won its second basketball game of the season, running past Petoskey St. Francis, 73-53. “We had just one win last year,” Pellston coach Francis McMahon said. “We have doubled that tonight.”
— The Petoskey High School athletic department announced that the program was “in the black.” Total expenditures for the 1960-61 school year was $7,976.59, total receipts were $6,665.55. Basketball and football took in over $4,600, basketball a little more from the tournaments that the high school gym hosted.

— Petoskey speed skaters opened the new season with a double header weekend in Flint and Midland. Leading the team was Gary Ross, who won the 330-yard dash, the 400 and 800 at both meets. Scott Hoch turned in second-place finishes in the 55, 110, and 220 during the Flint meet, while Bobby Russell had a second in the 330 in Midland.
— The Petoksey High School boys’ basketball team started the 1971 season 3-0, including a weekend sweep of Gaylord and Traverse City St. Francis. Gary Urman, Mike Davies, and Archie Kiogima led the Northmen to the weekend sweep.

— River Rouge came back from a halftime deficit to hand Petoskey a 64-44 loss in the Northmen’s boys’ basketball season-opener. “We lost our intensity in the second half,” Petoskey coach Paul Van Wagoner said.
— Jim Buchanan scored 28 points and Mike Loper added 12 as Charlevoix defeated Kalkaska, 61-46, in a boys’ basketball game. Boyne City opened the season with a 69-68 win over Harbor Springs as Brian Vroman and John Tompkins combined for 46 points. East Jordan dropped its season-opener to Onaway, 74-52. Doug Gerber scored 26 points to lead Alanson to a 59=58 win over Pellston.

— Area representatives on the All-Lake Michigan Conference football team were Brian Coolman, Lance Emig, B.J. Van Loo and Ryan Eleigh of Charlevoix; Kevin Smith; Andy Vondra and Mark Reymond of Boyne City; Steve Poole and Tom Reid of East Jordan; and Eric Flynn and Chris Sydow of Harbor Springs.

— The Petoksey High School hockey team opened its second varsity season with two losses. “I really think the scores are not indicative of how the team played,” said coach Logan Ciesielski.
— For the first time in more than 70 years, the Petoskey High School boys’ basketball team would playing in a new gym. The new home would seat 2,114 fans with room for 300 more in the standing areas. Phase II would add 562 more seats. The Northmen would host their first season-opening Petoskey Classic. Kalkaska, Marquette and Kalamazoo Central, the eventual tournament winner, rounded out the tournament field. Petoskey dropped its first game in the gym, 87-44, to Kalamazoo Central.
