TRAVERSE CITY — Close, oh so close.

The Petoskey High School boys’ tennis team went head-to-head with Traverse City Central at the Big North Conference tournament Tuesday at Traverse City West High School.

When all was said and done, just one point separated the Trojans and the Northmen.

Central, ranked No. 2 in the Division II state coaches poll, edged Petoskey, 35-34, to claim the tournament title and the overall league championship.

The Trojan finished with four flight champions, while Petoskey earned three flight titles in the six-team tournament.

Cadillac was third with 21 points, while T.C. West was fourth, 20; followed by Alpena, 10; and JV Consolidated, zero.

“At the end of the day, it would have been nice to have the Big North Conference title, but it’s all about preparation going into the state tournament,” Petoskey coach John Boyer said. “Today’s matches were great competition and just the fact we can get a tough conference tournament between regional and states, and have this type of competition, should really help up going into states.”

The Northmen, who last Thursday won their third consecutive Division III regional title, will play in the Division III state finals Oct. 14-15 at Holly and Grand Blanc. The Northmen are ranked No. 7 in the Division III state coaches poll.

“We have some great matches and even in the matches that we lost, we played well and fought hard,” Boyer said. “We left everything on the court and we did everything we could have done.”

Petoskey’s flight winners were Cam Muller at No. 2 singles, Christian Wilder at No. 4 singles, Adam Blachut and Tyler Rasmussen at No. 1 doubles.

Muller, who is 35-2 on the season, opened with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Alpena’s Andre Gagnon; def. West’s Chris Howse, 6-4, 3-6, 6-0; then topped Cadillac’s John Simons, 6-3, 6-3 in the final.

Muller’s win over Simons was his school-record 35th of the year. Aaron Sunday set the previous mark, 34, in 2003.

“Cam won his first match and then fought off a quad injury and fought off a tough T.C. West opponent to win in three sets,” Boyer said.

At No. 4 singles, Wilder opened with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Cadillac’s Tyler Thomas; defeated JV Consolidated, 6-0, 6-0; then topped Central’s Daniel Fedor, 6-4, 6-3 in the final.

“Christian just played awesome,” Boyer said. “He’s lost to Central twice already this year, but he was just on fire. Christian had a good day and as a result ended up flight champion.”

Blachut-Rasmussen opened at No. 1 doubles with a  6-0, 6-0 win over Cadillac; topped JV Consolidated, 6-0, 6-0; then beat Central’s Noah Stienke-Migual Gonzalez, 6-2, 6-2, in the final.

“Adam and Tyler had a pretty dominating performance,” Boyer said. “They lost just two games to Central, who they previously defeated in three sets earlier in the year.”

At No. 1 singles, Petoskey’s Zach Phillips opened with a 6-4, 6-3 win over West’s Andrew Hartman; he then beat Alpena’s Abram Purol, 6-2, 6-2; and fell to Central’s Fisher Sutherland, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2, in the finals.

“Zach won the pool he was playing in and made easy work of West and Alpena,” Boyer said. “He had a great match with Central and won the first set, but just ran out of gas. He had a great showing.”
