The baseball programs at South Anchorage and Dimond have established a tremendous rivalry, and in 2011, they met in the finals of both the state American Legion and state high school tournaments.

In the ASAA finals in Palmer, the lead changed hands several times before the Wolverines took the title by scoring six runs in the 12th inning to win, 14-8. High school games only last 7 innings in regulation.

Tied at 6 after seven innings, both teams scored twice in the 8th to keep the game going. Dimond hurt its chances by failing to score in the 9th and 10th despite loading the bases in both innings.

Connor Cucculu gave South a 10-8 lead with a two-run single, and the Wolverines kept the rally alive and put the game away. One of the big heroes for South was Bryan Baker, who tossed three innings of scoreless relief. The win marked the first state high school title for South.
