Aberdeen Roncalli was among the last teams in the state to play its first volleyball match on Tuesday, but the Cavaliers still hit the ground running.

While some teams had already played nine times, Roncalli was making its season debut in a 25-20, 25-20, 25-21 victory over Groton.

“The girls have been practicing a long time,” said first-year Roncalli coach Janelle Bierle. “This summer we put in a lot of time. We did the Aberdeen Central league. We did open gyms. We did team camps. We did jump workouts. It was nice just to finally get in the gym and play somebody other than us.”

The Cavaliers tried to make the most of their preparation time. Some players even went over to scout Groton last week.

“We knew that they were a good serving team and they showed that,” Bierle said.

The Cavaliers came out focused against the Tigers and probably had just a bit of frustration built up heading into the match.

“They were really ready to go,” Bierle noted. “You get tired of just playing each other in practice.”
