1909: During the first official test of the U.S. Army's first airplane, Orville Wright flew himself and a passenger, Lt. Frank Lahm, above Fort Myer, Va., for 1 hour 12 minutes.
1940: Bugs Bunny made his "official" debut in the Warner Bros. animated cartoon "A Wild Hare."
1967: The Aberdeen police department made its first arrest under a new city ordinance requiring motorcyclists to wear protective helmets.
1971: Officials claimed that as many as 1,000 elm trees would be lost in the state due to Dutch Elm Disease.
1981: Six-year-old Adam Walsh was abducted from a department store in Hollywood, Fla., and was later killed. His father, John Walsh, became a well-known crime victims' advocate.
