1961: The United States began Operation Nougat, a series of underground nuclear explosions in the Nevada Test Site, two weeks after the Soviet Union resumed testing its nuclear weapons.
1974: Girls basketball was added to the list of sanctioned sports in South Dakota. Roscoe, Selby, Ipswich, Java, Agar, Hosmer and Glenham had organized teams.
1991: Gov. George Mickelson launched a draft Janklow campaign in hopes of convincing the former governor to run for the U.S. Senate in 1992 against incumbent Tom Daschle.
2001: President George W. Bush ordered U.S. troops to get ready for war and braced Americans for a long, difficult assault against terrorists to avenge the Sept. 11 attack.
