It was Allison Cummins’ first 5-kilometer race, and it might have been her last.
Her twin brother Justin, on the other hand, has two races under his belt and could have many more ahead of him.
The two 11-year-olds shared the course Saturday at Millennium Park for the first and perhaps only time in the Pregnancy Resource Center 5K.
They didn’t run together for very long, as Justin left Allison behind soon after the start of the race. But they did share the experience, at least this once.
And no one enjoyed seeing them run more than their parents, Robert and Donna Cummins of Moreland.
“Oh, yeah, absolutely,” Donna Cummins said.
Justin Cummins said he tried his first 5K two weeks earlier thanks to some inspiration from others in his family.
“My aunt and uncle (Jennifer and Tim Martin) run, and I just thought, ‘I want to try one,’” he said.
Justin decided to give Saturday’s race a try after running Jennie Carol’s Memorial Mother’s Day Run in Danville on May 12, and Allison said she decided to run Saturday “because Justin was going to.”
She said she had fun, but she said the race was also harder than she expected.
“She’s just happy she finished,” Robert Cummins said.
Justin said the race was harder for him, too, than his previous race through the downtown Danville streets.
“It was a lot of uphill and downhill, and the other one was basically flat and then one big hill. I liked the other one a lot better,” he said.
Justin ran Jennie Carol’s 5K in 26 minutes, 54 seconds, finishing 92nd out of 460 runners. He was 31st of 57 runners Saturday with a time of 29:36.
He said he didn’t tell his sister a great deal about what to expect.
“I didn’t really tell her much, because she didn’t really ask much,” she said.
Allison’s time was 35:57, putting her in 41st place. It would have been lower had she not gone taken a wrong turn.
“I lost track. I went off course. I stopped and went back when I saw the other runners going (another direction),” she said.
“She was ready to go back to the car with us over there,”¿her father said, pointing out onto the course.
Both runners won first-place awards in their age divisions, though they had little competition.
Allison has done some running before, though it has been sprinting up and down basketball courts. Her mother said that while Justin will probably keep running, Allison may turn back to basketball.
“I think she’s going to stick with her AAU¿basketball,” Donna Cummins said.
Allison said she had fun and was pleased with her time in her first race, but she said she wasn’t sure whether she’d do it again.
“I don’t know. It depends if it’s close, if I don’t have a basketball tournament,” she said.
Justin, meanwhile, is looking ahead to a July 4 race. He also plans to join the track and cross country teams at Lincoln County Middle School — he enters the sixth grade this summer.
