15. Mark Erickson's top art shows of 2010 Hampton Roads

If any single visual arts attraction should rank at the top of heap in 2010, it has to be the May 1 opening of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts' new James W. and Frances G. McGlothlin Wing. The $150 million structure not only added 165,000 square feet of space but also went a long way toward taming the confusing knot of traffic patterns that left many visitors feeling lost as they tried to navigate the mishmash of four previous additions.

  17. Carlton Abbott: A Lifetime of Art & Work

After nearly 90 award-winning structures and dozens of solo art shows, Williamsburg architect and artist Carlton Abbott has carved out a commanding reputation. Few talents can match the breadth of his work, which ranges from accomplished drawing, painting and mixed-media sculptures to landmark museums, visitor centers and other high-profile structures. Fewer still have the creative vision and energy it takes to stand out in virtually every one of these endeavors. No one could have predicted such success, however, when - after an early academic stumble - Abbott graduated from James Blair High School in Williamsburg and headed to the University of Virginia. Some 50 years later, his legacy looms so large that he's filled the entire Peninsula Fine Arts Center with a retrospective exhibit of newly created and dusted-off work, framing more than 120 pieces of art - not to mention dozens of architectural photographs, plans and models - inside one of his most-recognized structures. "I feel lucky to have gotten this far down the trail," the 70-year-old Abbott says, sitting down with the Daily Press to look back on his career while preparing for the mammoth show. "A lot of it's luck. A lot of it's happenstance. A lot of it's family. And it doesn't turn out like this for everybody."
