  3. A Lecture on Faberge Eggs at The Bruce Museum in Greenwich

    Between 1885 and 1916, the Russian Imperial family had some rather fancy, bejeweled eggs created for them by the House of Faberg&eacute;. About 50 eggs were made, 42 of which survived (it must suck to be the guy that dropped one). Dr. Scott Ruby, Curator of Russian and European Art at Hillwood Estate in D.C. knows a thing or two about the egg-based masterpieces, and he'll be a the Bruce Museum Tuesday afternoon to talk about them. It'll be the first in a series of lectures in conjunction with <em>Eggshibition: Unscrambling Their History</em>. <strong></strong>

    Some of the more spectacular sharks and rays roaming the world's oceans are endangered, and though we know they exist, we know very little about them. Dr. Simon Thorrold uses data from satellite-based tagging to track them and try and figure out how they behave and what they're all about... so that we can help to keep them alive. Thorrold will be at the Bruce Museum Sunday night to discuss his work and the structure and functioning of ocean ecosystems in general.<strong> </strong>

    Eggs are pretty incredible. And edible, as per the advertising slogan that dates back to the late '70s. The current exhibit at the Bruce Museum, <em>Egg-hibition: Unscrambling Their History</em>, takes a look at every aspect of the egg, be it related to food, art, fairy tale fodder or pharmacology. They're crazy, beautiful things when you really think about it. The exhibit will also seek answers to the age old question, "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?"

    There are plenty of ways to pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this week, as we take a day off from working to celebrate his legacy (just in case you were suffering from holiday withdrawal). Friday, the Serendipity Chorale of Fairfield County returns to <strong>Temple Shearith Israel</strong> (46 Peaceable St., Ridgefield. Fri., Jan. 18, 7:30 p.m.) Friday night to sing African American and Jewish spirituals in memory of King, and hold a reading of his "I Have a Dream" speech. Monday, kids ages 5 through 11 are invited to the <strong>Westport Historical Society</strong> (25 Avery Place, Westport. Mon., Jan. 21, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. $60) where Westport artist Roe Halper will help them create watercolors on the theme of peace, unity and understanding, and share her own story of meeting Dr. King in Westport. Also on Monday, Dr. Yohuro Williams of Fairfield University will deliver a lecture on Black Power in Southern Connecticut at the <strong>Fairfield Museum and History Center</strong> (370 Beach Road, Fairfield.   12. Joseph Farris Exhibit at Molten Java in Bethel

    Bethel resident Joseph Harris has illustrated cartoons for <em>The New Yorker</em> since 1971 and has done covers for <em>Barron's</em>, <em>Harvard Magazine</em>, <em>ABA Journal</em> and a bunch of other publications. His paintings and cartoons are in the private collections of Jimmy Carter, Paul Mellon and William Safire and in the permanent collection at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich.
