1. Open Casting Call for Foodies: a CT Historical Society Cook-off

Did you know that America’s cookbook was published in Hartford? And that one of the four surviving original copies from the first 1796 publication will be on display at the CT Historical Society in April? And that you can visit it in person, while noshing on great food from the Pond House, drinking Hooker Beer and wines from Valley Views CT – and watching a live cooking contest?

  3. Connecticut Historical Society in Hartford Holding a Community Cook-Off

Hartford chef types will embrace the Connecticut Historical Society's Community Cook-Off, judged by local foodies MaryEllen Fillo (Hartford Courant), Kara Sundlun (WFSB), Chion Wolf (WNPR's Colin McEnroe Show), Krystian von Speidel (Hartford Magazine) and Caitlin Croswell (CaitPlusAte.com). Contestants compete in four categories: the Not-So-Secret Ingredient Challenge (the ingredients are bacon, chocolate and poblano peppers, which clearly need to happen in the same dish), From Grandma's Kitchen (yellowed page, family tree-style recipes), What's in that casserole, anyway?! and the always popular "I didn't know you could do that with Jell-O." Pros like the Pond House, Thomas Hooker Brewing Company and Diageo wines provide alternate grub (in case that bacon Jell-O chocolate casserole is a miserable flop).

  9. Cooking by the Book at the Connecticut Historical Society

Some of us have gone down that road of pawing through old cookbooks, not only to look for some old fried chicken or pie recipe but also to glimpse how our forebears used to feed themselves and their kinfolk. Head to Cooking by the Book: Amelia Simmons to Martha Stewart, a new exhibit opening on Jan. 18 at the Connecticut Historical Society in Hartford, where you'll gain a new appreciation of the world of pre-Guy-Fieri's-sideburns cooking. It traces changes in cuisine through iconic American cookbooks, including Amelia Simmons's American Cookery (1796, pictured). The opening reception and talk on Jan. 18 features food created from historic recipes. (You'll also want to pencil April 5, the date of a related community potluck, into your smartphone.)

  19. The Connecticut Historical Society in Hartford Remembers Prohibition in Connecticut

For months, CPTV solicited prohibition-era photographs and memorabilia from Connecticut residents for Prohibition: Connecticut Goes Dry, an original documentary airing soon. To celebrate, they've teamed up with the Connecticut Historical Society, Glastonbury's Pond House and Manchester's own purveyors of contemporary moonshine, Onyx Spirits, for a night of flapper dresses, fedoras, speakeasies and food. After downing some creative moonshine cocktails and grub, attendees, who'll catch the first glimpse of the documentary, will get to wander through the museum and gaze at other historical CT ephemera. Seating's limited, so get on the phone, flappers.
