1. Goldberg: Sci-fi worthy of Malthus

In the new sci-fi movie "Oblivion," Earth's most precious resource is Tom Cruise. But running a close second (spoiler alert) is water. Aliens want it. All of it.
In the new sci-fi movie "Oblivion," Earth's most precious resource is Tom Cruise. But running a close second (spoiler alert) is water. Aliens want it. All of it. This is old hat, science fiction-wise. In "The War of the Worlds," H.G. Wells had...

5. Face to face with vintage Hollywood history

Is there anything more unctuous than a 20-year-old celebrity? Heck, is there anything more unctuous than a 20-year-old, period — all angst, eyelashes and silly stilettos?
Is there anything more unctuous than a 20-year-old celebrity? Heck, is there anything more unctuous than a 20-year-old, period — all angst, eyelashes and silly stilettos? Yet give them time, and 20-year-olds will eventually grow, like sycamore...

7. Carey's alchemy of haunted longing drives 'Tears'

9. Gael Garcia Bernal's ad man has global reach

In "No," 34-year-old Guadalajara-born actor and filmmaker Gael Garcia Bernal plays a cocky Santiago, Chile, advertising man who has thrived under the economic policies of the nation's U.S.-backed ruler, Augusto Pinochet. Asked to concoct a TV advertising campaign to bring down Pinochet in the 1988 plebiscite, he's intrigued — not necessarily because he's a stealth radical (though his father, we're told, was sent into political exile to Mexico) but because the "no" vote is deemed by many to be an impossible product to sell to a wary populace.

11. Riveting 'Emperor' gets some dry revisions ★★

"I don't need a history lesson, Your Excellency," the true-blue American general tells Emperor Hirohito's ex-prime minister when he lectures his inquisitor about the bloody imperialist actions of Great Britain and America, along with Japan, in the new film "Emperor."

13. An indie brings Nick Offerman back to the Chicago area

Whenever I find myself in a bleak mood, a quick glance at the Ron Swanson Pyramid of Greatness usually does the trick. A near-perfect melding of minds between the "Parks and Recreation" writing staff and actor Nick Offerman, this visual guide on how to live life ("Crying: Acceptable at funerals and the Grand Canyon") is one of the NBC show's lasting legacies.

15. Politicians could use lesson in today's popular culture

We identify with popular culture more easily than we identify with politics, that's why pop culture is so popular, and a lot more interesting than government affairs. Hence the reason Barack Obama's speech last week took a backseat to his mixed Star Wars/...

THEATER REVIEW: "The Nutcracker" at House Theatre of Chicago ★★★ ... A few minutes into the House Theatre's distinctive "The Nutcracker," the Christmas jollity of an exuberant household is suddenly ended by a gust of frigid wind and the arrival at the door of a man in uniform.

21. Steve Harvey's relationship rules come to amusing life in 'Think Like a Man' ✭✭✭

Relaxed yet lively, the byplay in "Think Like a Man" has some of the spark of director Tim Story's "Barbershop" a decade ago. The movie may be the very definition of contrivance, coming as it does from the blithely sexist relationship guide "Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man," co-written by radio host and comedian Steve Harvey. Considering its source, though, one of the more unpromising comedies of the year has turned out ... pretty funny.

23. Oscars and American history: True, or true enough?

A modest proposal: Movies exploring some aspect of American history, such as “Argo,” “Lincoln” and “Zero Dark Thirty,” should leave off the “based on a true story” or “inspired by true events” language and stick to what “Lincoln” screenwriter Tony Kushner advocates: a clear, simple and proud declaration of “historical fiction.”
