  1. Thou Callest Me a Dog

Shakespeare wrote about dogs several times (our headline is from "The Merchant of Venice"), but only one of his plays features a dog with a name. Until March 17, you can catch that show -- "The Two Gentlemen of Verona" -- and the stage debuts of two local pups.

  7. Exhibition looks at Maurice Sendak in the wild

The first touring exhibition of Maurice Sendak's illustrations since his death at 83 last May is making its debut at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana. It's called "Maurice Sendak: 50 Years, 50 Works, 50 Reasons," but a more apt title might have been "Where the Wild Cards Are."

  11. A metaphor for life

Saturday, July 21, 1973, the first day of the second month of summer, began in an unusual and unexpected way. Looking forward to an exciting day on a Norwegian fjord, we were greeted by gray clouds, a bone-chilling mist, and a temperature of 35 degrees. I, along with most of those in the group, were not dressed for such summer weather. But we should have been better prepared, for we were in Norway, about 250 miles south of the Artctic Circle.

  21. Chesapeake Shakespeare Company ready for its next stage in life

Chesapeake Shakespeare Company is following through on the Bard's famous statement that all the world is a stage. As if it weren't enough that this Ellicott City-based theater company already uses various Howard County sites for its indoor productions, it's moving ahead with its plan to convert a former bank building in downtown Baltimore into a new permanent home.
