7. Review: Jay-Z and Kanye West's 'Watch the Throne' tour at 1st Mariner Arena

The best moment of Tuesday night's 'Watch the Throne' tour stop at 1st Mariner Arena — and there were plenty of candidates — came 17 songs in, when Jay-Z and Kanye West ditched the flashy, multi-piece set and sat down, side by side, like old friends on a stoop. As an Auto-Tuned Nina Simone sample of "Feeling Good" poured through the speakers, Jay-Z wiped his brow after removing his snakeskin Yankee snapback.

  9. 'The X-Factor' recap: Praise a higher power, it's the last night of auditions

[Ed. note: No running diary this time. I was judging a Battle of the Bands for WPOC in Hanover aka doing my best Simon Cowell impression, so I didn't get home until 8:40 p.m. I watched a DVR-ed version. The obvious good news of the night is the auditiions are over. The bad news is Boot Camp is next and that just sounds weird. On to the auditions (the good/interesting ones, at least):]

  11. National Book Award finalists announced - with an extra title

A deceased biographer and a first-time bestselling novelist are among the finalists for the 2011 National Book Awards. Five finalists in four categories – fiction, nonfiction, poetry and young people's literature – were announced Wednesday in Oregon. After the announcement, a sixth book was added to the list of finalists in young people's literature. "We made a mistake, there was a miscommunication," said Harold Augebraum, executive director of the National Book Foundation. "We could have taken one of the books away to keep it five, but we decided that it was better to add a sixth one as an exception, because they're all good books."

  17. Piri Thomas dies at 83; Latino writer

For Piri Thomas, being a dark-hued Latino in 1930s New York was far from the best of worlds. His siblings were fair-skinned, like his Puerto Rican mother, but he took after his black Cuban father, whose unsettled feelings about race scarred both of them. Thomas fell into gangs and drugs, shot a police officer during a robbery and ended up in prison for seven years.
