7. Burnt Sugar Does Steely Dan, Oct. 20 at Real Art Ways in Hartford

A 17-members rock "arkestra," led by writer/guitarist/producer Greg Tate. Special guests, including Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid. The awesomeness of Real Art Ways. And the music of ... Steely Dan? Mind-blowing, really. We're so used to hearing the altered blues of "Peg" and "Green Earrings" blared by college jazz ensembles rather than top-notch player/composers with Steve Coleman, Gary Lucas, Norah Jones, P-Funk and TV on the Radio on their resumes. But Donald Fagen and Walter Becker's subversive harmonies and misanthropic lyrics, longtime bellwethers separating ironic hipsters from post-ironic hipsters, are too interesting not to drag out of campus housing. Go back and listen to any track on 1975's Katy Lied, for example: this stuff's easily deep enough to unite 17 players, Greg Tate, Burnin' Vernon and the greater Hartford music-loving community for a single night. (Unless everyone's gone to the movies.)

  9. Lawsuits Involving TicketNetwork Still Ongoing

It wasn't supposed to go this way. Not very long ago, TicketNetwork Inc. was a fast-rising corporate star in Connecticut's dimly lit business sky. Donald Vaccaro's firm was chosen as one of newly elected Gov. Dannel Malloy's "First Five" companies and...

  13. Theaters On Political Wave? Not This Election in Connecticut

With the closing of Gore Vidal's "The Best Man" last week, the most politically direct show on Broadway has left the stage. It has also got me to thinking about theater and politics during these last few weeks of a major presidential campaign. I look...

  15. Next Level

It's a few days after the multi-city, multi-stage Grand Band Slam weekend. You need music that's inspiring, different, cleansing. Tim Brady's in Hartford on Wednesday night, playing the electric guitar in ways you've not heard. Brady composes electro-acoustic music, operas and dance scores, and he dabbles in free jazz and improvisation. This may be exactly the kind of thing you need right now: complicated, early fall music, happening at a venue that's constantly provoking us with its programming to think differently.

  17. Rupa and the April Fishes Play Real Art Ways in Hartford on Sept. 20

Rupa Marya sings in English, French, Spanish, Hindi and Tzotzil, a Mayan language spoken in the Mexican Chiapas state. She could sing in other languages if she wanted to. Marya’s band, Rupa and the April Fishes, similarly play global music: Gypsy swing, punk rock, Bollywood songs, cumbia, reggae and duduk. They are named for the French expression “les poissons d’avril,” whose English equivalent is most likely “April Fools.” The April Fishes formed in San Francisco during the George W. Bush presidency, which seems fitting.

  19. New Exhibit at Real Art Ways in Hartford Takes a Look at American Family Life

If you're a parent or have ever been a part of a family (so pretty much everybody), come and see Real Art Way's presentation of Hillerbrand + Magsamen. This video gallery, opening on September 11 and ending on October 28, is comprised of not one but two films that work collaboratively to create a different view of family life in America. How? By deconstructing our preconceived notions of the family through a suburban discourse, where family dynamics, life in suburbia and consumerism are discussed through the lens of the camera. Sounds complicated enough, just like all families.

  21. Real Art Ways in Hartford Celebrates the 1-Year Anniversary of Occupy Wall Street

If you haven't been living under a rock for the past year, then you've probably heard something about Occupy Wall Street. On September 17 at 7:30 p.m., Real Art Ways will celebrate the first anniversary of OWS with a reading of activist interviews that have been crafted into individual monologues. Entitled Occupy #S17, these performances are meant to shed light on the various people who were involved in the global phenomenon, accentuating each participant's distinctive voice while simultaneously realizing that these diverse voices also spoke out to pursue a common goal. The performance will also include theater artists from various institutions including the HartBeat Ensemble, ARTFARM, the Hartford Stage Company, Bated Breath Theater Company, Theater 4 and Jacques Lamarre, a Connecticut playwright.
