The New York mayor and billionaire backed up his words with his checkbook, contributing $250,000 to support same-sex marriage efforts in Maryland, The New York Times reported Friday.
"The next great barrier to full equality under the law is marriage equality," Bloomberg wrote. "There is no doubt in my mind this barrier will fall, just as so many others have. The question is not if, but when."
The big name endorsement came as supporters are trying to shift attention away from a Gallaudet University official who was suspended (with pay) from her position as a diversity officer when her bosses learned that she had signed a petition to put the Maryland same-sex marriage law on the ballot.
Supporters, including Gov. Martin O'Malley, have called on the university to re-instate her.
