A Baltimore police officer shot and killed a 20-year-old man just before dawn Saturday after chasing him from a 7-Eleven to a nearby block in the Langston Hughes neighborhood near Pimlico Race Course.
Police received an anonymous call shortly before 6 a.m. about an armed man at the 7-Eleven near West Belvedere Avenue and Reisterstown Road, Sgt. Anthony Smith said. When officers arrived, the suspect ran away and was chased to the 5100 block of Arbutus Ave. The suspect was armed with a semiautomatic pistol.
The suspect, Devonte Bowman of the 2500 block of Edgecombe Circle North, was shot once. He was pronounced dead at Sinai Hospital. The officer, a six-year veteran whose identity was not immediately released, was not hurt. He has been placed on routine administrative leave.

Herbert Dorsey, who has lived around the corner on Garrison Avenue since 1988, said he was used to crime in the area.
"That's the first I heard of a shooting," Dorsey said.
Mary Campbell, who lives a block away, said she awoke at 6:15 a.m. and saw police tape and flashing lights up the street but didn't know details of the shooting.
A preliminary investigation has not determined whether the suspect intended to rob the 7-Eleven store, Smith said. The manager, who identified himself only by his first name, Ravi, because he did not have corporate authorization to comment, said that the incident occurred outside and that the store wasn't robbed. Police were in the store's office reviewing surveillance tape when a reporter visited.
There have been seven police-involved shootings in Baltimore this year, six of them fatal.
Baltimore detectives are also investigating a nonfatal shooting in the 4100 block of Newton Ave. about 2 a.m., Smith said. The victim, a 25-year-old man, was shot in the left bicep and taken to Sinai Hospital, where he was treated and released.
The victim and an associate were at the Citgo gas station at Northern Parkway and Reisterstown Road when they were approached by two males, police said. One of the approaching males displayed a handgun, demanded money and ordered them to take off their clothes. The victim attempted to flee, and one of the males shot him in the arm. The two fled east.
