Phelps wins 100 fly, takes 2nd in 100 free at Santa Clara
Michael Phelps won the gold in the 100-meter butterfly final Friday night at the Santa Clara International Grand Prix in Santa Clara, Calif., the seventh and final stop of the 2010-2011 USA Swimming Grand Prix Series. Phelps, of Fells Point, also took silver in the 100 freestyle final. Phelps recorded a time of 52.41 seconds in the butterfly final, touching the wall ahead of Australian Nicholas D'Arcy, who posted a 53.34. In the freestyle final, Phelps finished in 49.61 seconds, behind Park Tae Hwan of South Korea, who won in 48.92. Tae Hwan also won gold in the 400 freestyle, touching the wall in 3:49:99.

Michigan to begin fielding varsity team in 2013
Michigan announced that it will field its first women's varsity lacrosse team in 2013 and play in the American Lacrosse Conference, home to Johns Hopkins and six-time national champion Northwestern. In addition to the Blue Jays and Northwestern, which won the 2011 national title, the conference includes Florida, Vanderbilt, Penn State and Ohio State. Despite its youth, the conference regularly ranks among the top conferences in Division I. For seven of the past 10 seasons, the conference has had the top RPI. This year, all of the conference's teams were ranked in the national polls at some point during the season.Johns Hopkins coach Janine Tucker, who took the Blue Jays from Division III to Division I in 1999, welcomes the addition as Michigan elevates a club program already in place. "It's really a great program to add," Tucker said. "Our conference is very unique because we have such a different and interesting variety of schools and to have a school like Michigan that is going to really support the program and help it be good as quickly as possible is wonderful." In addition to Michigan, two other schools will add women's lacrosse in 2013. Marquette will begin play as an independent and then join the Big East, which also includes Loyola, in 2014. USC will play in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation league along with such teams as Stanford, Denver and Oregon.

Five Terps to play in USA Field Hockey's junior championship
Five members of the 2010 NCAA and Atlantic Coast Conference champion Maryland field hockey team will play in USA Field Hockey's Junior High Performance championships beginning today in Virginia Beach, Va. Kirstie Dennig of Pocomoke City, Natalie Hunter and Christine Knauss (Garrison Forest) will play on the Mid Atlantic team, while Janessa Pope and Tara Zollinger will compete for the Pennsylvania team in the weeklong tournament. Pope and Zollinger both played on the title-winning Pennsylvania team in last summer's championships as well. Six teams, made up of the nation's top 108 players under age 20 from USA Field Hockey's Junior High Performance Centers, will compete in the junior national championships, which have a round-robin format. Participants will have the opportunity to be selected to attend the Junior National Camp at Old Dominion University from July 12-15. The Junior National Camp serves as a selection opportunity on to the USA women's under-21, U-19 and U-17 national squads.
