1. The Top 10 Connecticut Business Stories of 2012

In some ways, 2012 was a carryover year from news of 2011, as the governor continued his aggressive economic development spending, United Technologies Corp. consummated a deal it announced in 2011, and the year's nastiest labor strike grew out of a 2011 lockout. But in the big picture of the state's economy, Connecticut got worse, not better, compared with the nation. That became the state's top business story of 2012 and will shape the scene in 2013.

5. Crime & Punishment: Director of Connecticut SPCA Charged With 62 Counts of Animal Cruelty

Rufus Spearman, who police allegedly caught carrying drugs and a gun in his car, showed up for his court date at the New Haven Superior Court, where parole officers were waiting to arrest him on additional charges of violating his parole, reports the New Haven Register. It was then that they discovered Spearman, 36, was walking around with crack cocaine, marijuana and PCP in his underwear. In similar news, the Connecticut Post reports that ex-con Jonathon Baker, who was on route to an appointment with IRS agents, allegedly entered a Bridgeport court building with a bag containing drug dealing supplies (such as a digital scale and glassine envelopes) as well as several bullets — or as Baker, 35, explained in a text message he sent from the courthouse: "My dumb ass came thru the metal detector at the IRS and forgot there were bullets in my bag. Now I'm waiting to see if they gonna lock me up." (They did.)

19. Public TV in Germany, It's No PBS

One of the reasons public TV is so big in Germany is that it was the only TV in the national until 1984, when private stations began broadcasting.
German television is different than television in the United States. That is what I have gathered after visiting two German TV outlets, one public and one private. The largest difference is that public television gets about 50% of the viewership in...

23. From the Right: States' woes reflect Dickensian times

Most everyone with a high school diploma is familiar with the great Dickens novel, “A Tale of Two Cities.” This week I am writing a tale of two states. There will, of course, be a couple of differences between the two. One, I am sure mine will not go down as a literacy classic. Two, my tale will not be a great work of fiction but an all too sad reality story. I cannot promise to give you a classic of American literature, but it will hopefully be one the people of this once great state of California will want to study.
