"The Spirit of Transportation" was taken by Chicago photographer King Daniel Ganaway in February, 1918. It first appeared in the Chicago Defender in 1921 and won the Wanamaker department store national photo contest the same year, beating out photos from legendary photographers Edward Weston, Man Ray and Paul Strand.
