Bears starting wide receiver Roy Williams said he knows “if I mess up or anything, it’s going to be blown out of proportion.’’
He also said he’s not perfect.
Oh, and he also said something like the Bears have five or six No. 1 receivers, although only one comes pre-diva’d.
I can’t tell if Williams is already making excuses. Or maybe he’s trying to lower expectations. Either way, too late. When you can’t get in shape and can’t make catches with everybody watching, along with a reputation for making excuses and blaming everybody else, then you’ve quadrupled the amount of C-4 in the Roy Williams bomb.
So, yeah, the guy’s screwups will get blown out of proportion because that’s what we do.
And if it happens, Williams can blame Mike Martz for a lot of it.
The offensive coordinator obviously pushed to bring Williams to the Bears. The offensive coordinator popped off immediately about 70 or 80 catches for Williams this season. The offensive coordinator is the one who gave Williams the starting job ahead of the Bears’ leading receiver last year.
Maybe it’s me, but that doesn’t seem to leave a lot of room for messing up, which leaves a lot of time for ranting.
But here’s the thing: There’s no blowing anything out of proportion if Williams delivers what his team is propping him up to deliver.
It’s OK to have a big year to match your big talk, pal.
And you know what? If Williams does deliver the way the Bears are propping him up to deliver, then that, too, will be blown out of proportion because that’s also what we do.
And you know what else? If Williams does deliver, that probably means the Martz du Soleil offense is working --- the Martz du Soleil offense that nearly killed Jay Cutler and the Bears’ season in the first half of the season.
During the bye week, you’ll recall, the Death Eaters devoured Martz’s brain and Harry Potter replaced it with a common sense offense balancing the pass and run, and the Bears ran off a winning streak that ran them into the NFC Championship Game.
The Bears’ offense still finished among the dregs. They couldn’t score like big-boy teams overall and they couldn’t mount long drives. Till further notice, those problems carry into this season.
Which is where the Bears tell us Williams comes in. He had big numbers in Martz’s scheme, even if it was an NFL generation ago. He’s also the big receiver that Cutler has pined for. But sssshhh, don’t say anything about the way Williams has been outplayed by Johnny Knox this exhibition season. Or the way he was outplayed by Knox last season. Or the way a lot of guys outplayed Williams last season, and that was just in Dallas.
Much suggests that Williams doesn’t deserve to start. But he will. That means he matters more than his recent production would warrant. He also carries more attention. Heck, see Martz himself for details. Martz wasn’t in demand around the league, and didn’t win the popular vote around Lake Forest. He got the one vote that mattered from the head coach’s office. So, now even Halas Hall pets have pets.
Good thing is, we’ll know in a hurry which way this goes. It’s so simple that even a diva can figure it out: Catch passes, drop excuses.
