NORMAL, Ill. – Quincy Notre Dame’s quest for a third consecutive state title hit a snag before Friday’s game started.
Three-time defending Class 3A state champion Montini lost to Vernon Hills in the first Class 3A semifinal to spoil a potential rare matchup of state champions.
Quincy Notre Dame avoided Montini’s fate by scoring the first 12 points en route to a 67-51 win over Morton in the second Class 3A semifinal at Redbird Arena.
The Raiders (29-0) have won two Class 2A state titles in a row heading into Saturday’s 2 p.m. Class 3A championship game against Vernon Hills, and remain on track to accomplishing several historic achievements.
“We certainly have a lot of respect for Vernon Hills,” Quincy Notre Dame coach Eric Orne said. “They have a lot of size and are very powerful. Obviously, at this time of the year they know how to win.”
Quincy Notre Dame has won 52 straight games, not lost to a team from Illinois since the 2010 Class 2A state championship game to Bloomington Central Catholic and can become the first team in Illinois High School Association history to win back-to-back state titles in two different classes.
