Breanna Briggs of Wamego won the girls' race.

The Shrine Bowl had its second annual cross country race in conjunction with the football game Saturday, July 25. In all, 49 of the state's top graduated seniors represented the East and the West on the boys' and the girls' sides.

The boys' race was won by the West, which was led by a 1-2 finish from David Roberts of Mulvane and Tom O'Connell of Andover. It was a turn of events as the two had battled each other all through high school on the league, regional and state levels.

Both Roberts and O'Connell own one Class 4A individual state cross country title.

Roberts ran a time of 9:25 to win the race. O'Connell was seven seconds back at 9:32. The high school rivals will now be college rivals. The Mulvane harrier will attend the University of Kansas and O'Connell will go to Kansas State University in the fall.

The East was led by St. Thomas Aquinas standout Kyle Hanson, who ran a time of 9:43 to finish third. The Class 6A 3200-meter champion from Derby, Jake Wike, was fourth overall and the third West runner across the finish line with a finish time of 9:45.

Wike was followed by three more West runners in Graham Armstrong of Manhattan, Brayden Barrientez of Campus and Kyle Glasgow of Kapaun Mt. Carmel.

The final score on the boys' side was 71 to 140 in favor of the West.

In the girls' race, the depth of the East was too much for the West to handle. The East won 88 to 122.

Breanna Briggs of Wamego won the race with a time of 11:14. She was followed by the West's top finisher, Marley Crusch of Manhattan. Crusch ran a time of 11:22.

The East and West then continued to trade places with Casey Epps from Olathe East finishing third for the East squad. Haley Wolf of Ellis answered for the West with a fourth-place finish. Olathe South's Keli Russell was fifth. The 3A individual state champion and leader of the 3A team champion, Amanda Callaway of Belle Plaine, was sixth.

The East squad picked up the win by packing together and taking eighth through 12th place.
