  1. Responses to Dorner case contain surprises

A Christopher Dorner sighting was reported Sunday in my Northridge neighborhood. Helicopters swarmed, patrol cars roared up. The hardware store was evacuated and my favorite bakery roped off.

  3. LAPD Chief Charlie Beck's side

In the three-plus years since Charlie Beck put on the chief's badge at the LAPD, his goal has been to consolidate a modern, multiethnic, publicly responsible 10,000-officer department, as envisioned in the rattling reforms of 15 and 20 years ago. The chief's recent trial by fire was about one ex-probationary cop named Christopher Dorner and the manhunt that ended in Dorner's death, consumed millions in law enforcement dollars and ate up, for the moment at least, some fraction of the goodwill the LAPD has been working to bank. With investigations launched into Dorner's claims and the LAPD's use of force, Beck sizes up the fallout so far.

  5. Dorner and the LAPD legacy

I expected fireworks in South Los Angeles this week, when LAPD Chief Charlie Beck showed up at a community meeting to talk about Christopher Dorner, the ex-cop turned killer whose manifesto cast the department in an ugly light, resurrecting decades of buried wrongs.

  7. Can a new pope save the Catholic Church?

It's been a busy week. The Senate voted 78-22 to renew the Violence Against Women Act. Christopher Dorner, ex-cop turned cop killer, was finally tracked down near Big Bear, Calif. Leaders of the International Olympic Committee voted to drop wrestling from the Summer Games in 2020. And President Obama delivered a powerful State of the Union address.
