On Oct. 19, the sixth- and seventh-grade classes at Berlin Brothersvalley Middle School enjoyed a field trip to Fort Ligonier thanks to the generosity of Somerset Trust Co.
Guided tours began with an overview of the history of the fort and George Washington's involvement in the French and Indian War. Stations were set up and the students were able to explore the grounds and museums. They visited the artillery fields, barracks, the underground magazine and the officers' quarters. They learned about the life of the soldiers, the food they ate and the hardships they endured. Groups of four to five students were able to build and name their own forts in a hands-on activity. They also explained the importance of their designs and location of their forts.
Again, thank you, Somerset Trust.
