Bishop McCort Catholic High School senior Lisa Vatavuk was awarded first place in the Johnstown-Somerset Central Labor Council Annual Scholarship Essay Contest.
Her essay was titled: “The Modern Tax System: Fair to the Average American?” Vatavuk received $1,500 and a paid internship with AmeriServ Financial. She will attend Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the fall and major in Computer Science.
Her essay caught the attention of Congressman Mark Critz, who read her speech on the House floor on Wednesday, May 16. The video can be found on YouTube: Critz Reads Essay on “The Modern Tax System: Fair to the Average American?”
Since 1995, the Central Labor Council has administered this scholarship essay contest in an effort to encourage students to conduct research about the many contributions organized labor has made to the American society.
