Because of the potential for accidents, farms with manure storages need to have a safety plan. Some minimum guidelines include:
Non-essential workers and other people should stay away from the area during agitation and pump out.
No one should work alone near the storage facility.
A reliable communication device should be easily accessible and all workers should know the emergency contacts.
Rescue equipment to handle incidents such as lack of air, falling into liquid and injuries, should be available near the manure storage and kept in good working condition.
Winter will come and it will certainly bring many challenges for manure handling systems. Obstacles are inevitable. By taking some time now to plan for such situations, hopefully these obstacles will be inconveniences and not catastrophes.
