Health insurance costs may go up by 9.2 percent in the 2013-14 school year, Shade-Central City school board Vice President Michael Knapp said during a monthly meeting Monday.

This increase would cost the school an additional $113,438 in premiums, business manager Stacey Papinchak said after the meeting.

“We are significantly higher than the rest of them,” she said, referring to other schools.

She said the increase is high because of medical care usage. The faculty is self-insured, so premiums are usage-based.

Shade is projected to have the highest increase in the Bedford-Somerset County School Consortium.

Consortiums are sometimes formed by school districts with similar needs to increase purchasing power and to drive down costs.

The second highest increase in Somerset County is 7.2 percent at Turkeyfoot, Rockwood and the Somerset County Technology Center. The lowest increase is 3.2 percent at Berlin.

“We are in negotiations with our teachers, so that might change,” she said.

A teacher contract meeting is scheduled for March 5.

“There are a lot of options. It’s just getting them to agree with them,” Papinchak said.
