WINDBER — Somerset is peaking at the right time as the the Eagles swept Windber 6-0 in boys tennis Thursday.
In singles play, Matt Kimmel defeated Steve Thomas 10-6. Jared and Justin Harshbarger defeated Jake Hanley and Nick Napora with matching 10-5 scores. Marcel Schnalke defeated Adam Sube 11-9. In doubles, the Harshbargers defeated Thomas and Sube 8-2. Kimmel and Schnalke versus Hanley and Napora was rained out at 8-8 and Jeremy Scheffel and Shivam Pital defeated Adam Feather and Brandon Sabo 10-2.
"Up and down the lineup it was a strong effort," head coach John Harris said. "We are playing our best tennis at the end of the season as we begin preparing for districts."
Windber falls to 6-8. Somerset (14-2) hosts Greater Johnstown Tuesday.
Lions 10, SDC 1
SOMERSET — Lions defeated SDC 10-1 in Somerset Little League rain-shortened baseball Thursday.
Ethan Svonavec picked up the mound win with Grant Norris coming in for relief. Norris led the Lions with three hits. John Heller and Svonavec had two hits each. Ryan Funa tripled while Tyler Fochtman and Derek Talley both singled.
SDC had hits from Coltin Stutzman, Ryan Yachere and Connor Singo. Stutzman and Shane Roberts pitched for SDC.
Piney Run seniors
GARRETT — The foursome of Gary Starkey, Mickey Talley, Jim Drake and Robert Harper shot a 5-under par to claim top honors in the Piney Run senior morning scramble Thursday.
Second place went to Butch Sechler, Jeff Morgan, Ernie Smith and Barry Yoder with a 3-under. Third place went to Dave Williams, Jake Knotts and George Housel with a 2-under.
Williams, Knotts and Paul Conn won the afternoon scramble with a 4-under.
Second place went to Denny Smith, Morgan, Housel and Yoder with a cardoff 3-under. Third place went to Starkey, Talley, Harper and Gary Barton with a 3-under.
Longest putt on No. 5 went to Drake in the morning and Williams in the afternoon. Ernie Smith was closest to the pin on No. 9. Knotts was the 50-50 winner.
Fifteen seniors participated in the morning and 14 participated in the afternoon.
The next Piney Run senior scramble will be at 10 a.m. Monday.
Annual Fishing Derby
SOMERSET — The Salvation Army Somerset Service Center will be holding its 8th annual Fishing Derby on May 19 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
The event will take place at the Laurel Ridge Sportsman's Association Inc., 2908 Coxes Creek Rd, Somerset, PA 15501.
