MARTINSBURG — The Somerset varsity swimmers improved their record to 2-0 at Thursday's swim meet against Central High School.
The Eagle boys won 92-30 and the Eagle ladies brought home a 101-57 victory.
Junior captain Nick Bastian led the boys to victory as a four-time winner. He captured first place finishes in the 50 freestyle (25.85) and the 100 butterfly (1:10.72).
Bastian was a member of the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:46.22) joined by teammates Shane Ickes, Brandon Williams and Josh Stoppe. He was also a member of the winning 400 freestyle relay (4:25.99) with Williams, Ickes and junior captain Brenden Knecht. Williams and Ickes were both three-time winners as well.
Williams took an individual win in the 200 freestyle (2:37.32) and Ickes won the 100 backstroke (1:19.97). Ickes was followed by Kimmel in the 100 backstroke (1:25.37) and Williams was followed by Jim deVries in the 200 freestyle (2:45.16) allowing the boys to take 1-2 in these events.
deVries was a member of the winning 200 medley relay team of Nick Kimmel, Stoppe and Andy Bastian. Stoppe and Knecht brought in second place finishes in the 50 freestyle (25.86) and 100 butterfly (1:15.63) respectively.
The 200 freestyle relay (2:15.94) team of Kimmel, A. Bastian, Knecht and deVries also took second place. This allowed the Eagle boys to go 1-2 in these events as well.
The boys had three district qualifying swims at this meet: Bastian in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly and Stoppe in the 100 breaststroke.
The Lady Eagles were led by triple winner and junior captain Emily Schleich. She was a member of the winning 200 medley relay (2:21.07) joined by teammates Danielle Owen, Katie Yachere and Elexsis Robison.
Schleich took firsts in the 200 freestyle (2:15.15) and the 100 butterfly (1:10.36). Junior captain Mary Mack brought in two individual wins for the Lady Eagles in the 50 freestyle (26.83) and the 500 freestyle (6:17.72). Yachere finished second in the 100 butterfly (1:18.69) allowing the girls to go 1-2 in this event.
