1. The GOP confronts its 'stuffy old men' problem

Give some credit to the Republican National Committee for at least recognizing that the Grand Old Party has a bit too much "old" and not enough "grand." Its recently released 100-page, post-election analysis, put together by veteran party advisers, points...

5. The unmasking of Paul Ryan and his budget

Quick! Somebody tell President Obama. Alert the members of Congress. Shout it out to the media: I have balanced the budget!
Quick! Somebody tell President Obama. Alert the members of Congress. Shout it out to the media: I have balanced the budget! That's right. Me. Bill Press, talk show host. I did it. I can't balance my own checkbook, but I balanced the federal budget. In...

7. Invest wisely in early childhood

As we struggle through the fifth year of recession, facing budget cuts, austerity and now the sequester, it may be a good time to re-evaluate our national priorities. Last year, the Reach Out and Read program that distributes books to low-income children from 6 months to 5 years lost its federal grant and this year the Head Start program is being cut back. These cuts will be borne by our most vulnerable citizens.

9. Don't repeal Obamacare -- yet

I've always had mixed feelings about President Obama's health care reform. It offers too many goodies while asking too little of those who will benefit. It assumes expensive prevention services will pay for themselves. It relies on a coercive individual mandate that Obama rejected when he ran for president.

13. GOP's effort to roll back healthcare reforms is bad policy

Bernie Morse, 65, of Century City retired last year from the aerospace industry and joined the ranks of Medicare beneficiaries. The nearly $8,000 he used to spend annually on drugs for a liver condition now will be cut almost in half.

15. The Medicare debate we need

One criticism of the Medicare overhaul that House Budget Committee Chairman Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) has championed is that it would shift more and more of the program's costs onto seniors. In the latest version of his plan, Ryan acknowledges that capping the growth of the program could, in fact, make health insurance more expensive for some retirees. But that's part of the point of the change, which would concentrate Medicare spending on the poorest and sickest seniors.
