1. Education gap begins early

Morgan State University President David Wilson makes a compelling argument that "receiving a quality education at the elementary and secondary level is a civil and moral right" ("Why education should be considered a civil right," May 13). I applaud his altruism, but elementary education is too late to solve this achievement gap.

7. "Corporations don't pay taxes." Great talking point. Sorry logic.

Takiing Names
As many of you know, America is currently experiencing a trend where the nation’s tax burden is being shifted away from corporations – and to individual taxpayers. This is largely due to companies taking advantages of tax breaks,...

9. In early education, quality is what counts

There has been a lot of conflicting information in the local and national press recently about pre-kindergarten. As longtime practitioners of the art of early childhood education, the Maryland Family Network would like to offer some perspective and broaden the conversation.

11. Working poor didn't cause crash

I must take issue with letter writer Stanley Glinka's assertion that it was "the policy of forcing banks to give loans to people who could not afford them" that led to our current financial mess ("Stop blaming Bush," May 1).

19. No fireworks (mercifully) for G.A. wrap-up

23. A public health compromise for California

The Legislature is poised to offer health insurance to millions of additional low-income Californians, with the federal government covering much of the cost. The expansion would be a boon to counties, which collectively spend billions of dollars caring for the indigent uninsured. One sticking point, though, is what to do with the more than $4 billion in sales taxes and vehicle license fees the state has been sending back to counties every year to help pay for public health programs — and that the Brown administration wants to reclaim. Last week a group of nonprofits offered a sensible compromise, proposing that counties keep the funds if they spend them on a more efficient way to deliver care to the needy.
