  1. Viewpoint: Train trek to chocolate, party and more

Last week I went to Orange County on Amtrak to visit my kids. Saturday night I had a delicious dessert called “Chocolate Thunder From Down Under” at Outback Steak House. The next afternoon we went to a 90th birthday party. After sampling a beautiful buffet, I had a slice of an amazingly decadent chocolate cake, plus two other desserts. That evening I was back home again and found a chocolate dessert from Extraordinary Desserts that was left by a friend.

  3. Hartford Could Borrow From Southern Cities

    The Hartford Courant
I wanted to see some cities in the South; my sainted wife Anne indulged me for our 25th anniversary last month. We went by train from Hartford, stopping for a few days each in Washington, Richmond, Va., Charleston, S.C., and Savannah, Ga. From which, a...

  7. Catonsville works on trail project

After the frost lowers the mosquito population, a dedicated group of park builders will be clearing a path through the middle of Catonsville. They are reclaiming the old right of way of the Catonsville Short Line Railroad, a route that has been overtaken by weeds and trees since the last train left for good in the spring of 1972.

  9. Boston-bound on my birthday

I wanted to turn 23 in Boston. Or maybe I wanted to try to end the 22nd year of my life on a good note — the kind of "good note" that even a maestro would appreciate.   But first I needed to arrange a way to travel from Pennsylvania to...

  17. Plano capitalizes on 'Man of Steel' with Superman-themed festival

You don't have to look very hard in Plano to find traces of the Superman reboot that filmed in the western suburb last summer. Plano, which doubled as the fictional town of Smallville in the upcoming “Man of Steel,” has yet to take down the Smallville City Hall sign on the Amtrak depot or paint over the hard-to-miss U.S. flag mural located on the city's main street.
