5. The Mark Twain House in Hartford Featuring 'Cat Art'

Sam "Mark Twain" Clemens had cats. Not the lolz kind, real ones. At least three of them, with names like "Satan," "Pestilence" and "Famine." (Pretty much sums up how many of us feel about cats too.) Earlier this month, the Mark Twain house opened The Countess and Her Cats, a new exhibit of works by artist and children's books illustrator Cynthia von Buhler (that's her work above), who also creates elaborate 3-D dioramas and models. Because her work appeals to the youngest among us, the Twain house will host two events for children: a Halloween Tea Party with the Countess (Oct. 27 at 2 p.m.), which is a pre-Halloween dress-up bash featuring tea with the artist, and a mid-December diorama workshop with Buhler, which happens just in time to make gifts for grandma and grandpa. (Hope they dig cats.) The Countess & Her Cats runs until Jan. 15.

  11. 'Nutshell' murder dioramas arrive on film

A man hangs from a rope connected to the beam of a barn, his feet smashing through a wooden crate so he looks like he's cut off at the knees. His wife explains that when he was angered or annoyed, he would go to that spot, get up on a bucket, put a noose around his neck and threaten suicide. On the fatal day, she placed the bucket elsewhere, so he grabbed the crate.
