7. City Lights: Emerging on the page

If you're within a decade of my age, you may forgive my ignorance when I say that I grew up associating autism with the movie "Rain Man." For those who, like me, saw the film during middle school and rarely mingled with special-education peers, Dustin...

9. Beneath the Darkness

I thought it was clever that the teen comedy Easy A had the kids in class reading The Scarlett Letter – as a real life version of that was happening to the characters. For a short time, this movie seemed to be loosely based on Edgar Allan Poe’s The Telltale Heart. The class was reading that, and there were a few similarities. It’s a shame the movie couldn’t live up to that and all the other scary things we were reminded of watching this. We get Dennis Quaid going all Norman Bates. We think of other movies where characters are buried alive, yet when it’s done here we don’t have the panic or scares those other films brought to the table.

11. The Valley Line: A new year and new beginnings

Here we are into the second week of January already. I reluctantly removed the ornaments from my tree, wrapping each one carefully in tissue paper. I always hate putting them away because they are so magical and representative of places I’ve been in the world and memories of family times. It will be an entire year before I see them again.

Critics are idiots.
Critics are idiots. Now usually when I say that, it’s to complain about them praising a horrible French film. This time it’s for the bad reviews Contraband is getting. Don’t get me wrong. This isn’t a great picture. It’s...

19. Willie Waffle Movie Reviews 01/13/12

This week Willie reviews Angelina Jolie's In the Land of Blood and Honey, which he calls an ambitious venture. Willie says the film is good but pulls too much of it's wallop from it's focus on the atrocities of the Serbian war and not enough from the love story. Also this week, he reviews the Margaret Thatcher biopic, The Iron Lady. Meryl Streep's performance is flawless but the rest of the cast falls short. Willie also reviews the films Carnage and Contraband; and Willie gets a chance to meet up with the cast of In the Land of Blood and Honey.

23. Film review: "Contraband" should have smuggled in a better storyline

The first few months of the year are traditionally the worst as far as getting decent new movies. Mega-blockbusters usually open in the summer or around the holidays. Lately, the release slates in March and April have been gaining steam as well.
