  9. Do you have the nation's worst job?

Back in the day when I worked really hard at being a reporter, I would sometimes ponder how my job compared to other jobs. (OK. Those who know me may be wondering just how far back we have to go in order to see me working really hard, but let me make my...

  11. 'VEEP' and 'Cards' bringing money, glam to our gritty city

Only three years ago, Baltimore and Maryland were all but out of the TV and film production business. After the glory years of “Homicide,” “The Corner,” “The Wire” and tens of millions of HBO dollars spent here on Maryland crews and materials, state funding for incentives had ended, and Hollywood had left Baltimore in its rear view mirror for what looked like good.

  15. Sarah Palin is right about Washington's press

We call it the "nerd prom," hoping that a dose of irony will inoculate us. But there's no use denying it: The White House Correspondents' Association's annual dinner is a deeply narcissistic event. I realize I'm jumping on the bandwagon late here...

  17. News of the Weird: Chocolate Toothpaste and 'Holy Crap' Cereal!

The Precocious Tots of Finland: A University of Kansas professor and two co-authors, in research in a forthcoming issue of the Journal of Finance, found that children age 10 and under substantially outperformed their parents in earnings from stock trading in the few days before and after rumors swirled on possible corporate mergers. A likely explanation, they said, is that the parents or guardians were buying and selling for their children's accounts using illegal insider information that they were cautious about using in their personal accounts, which would more easily arouse suspicion. While the parents' accounts had nice returns, the kids' accounts (including those held by the very recently born) were almost 50 percent more profitable. (The study, reported by NPR in April, covered 15 years of trades in Finland, chosen because that country collects age data that the U.S. and other countries do not.)
