The 62nd Berlin International Film Festival kicks off Thursday, and with nearly 400 films screening over 10 days in Germany’s chilly capital, it's hard to find just one theme to describe this year's Berlinale. To be sure, the event’s signature...

9. Werner Herzog’s “On Death Row” for ID explores humanity’s despair

Channel Guide Magazine
The name Werner Herzog conjures so much awe and mythology that it's almost hard to believe he has a four-part series on Investigation Discovery. But then you find out that the series is called On Death Row and is a companion to his recent film, Into the...

11. Weighing my options at Landmark

Lakeview
As November wears on and the weird Chicago weather gets even weirder, I find myself drawn to the movie theatre. (Oh, who am I kidding? I find myself drawn to the movie theatre all year long.) This week looks particularly good for Landmark Century Centre...

17. 'Life Itself': Ebert autobiography a charming remembrance

In his easygoing, candid and altogether charming autobiography, or, as he calls it, "Life Itself: A Memoir," Roger Ebert fails to mention me: The nights he and I had many drinks on the porch of his house on Dickens Street and elsewhere, the favorable in-print review I gave to one of his early forays into television or the many times he attempted, persuasively but without success, to convince me of the benefits of AA.

19. Book review: 'The Affair' by Lee Child

I used to have a rural fantasy. Then I started reading the Jack Reacher novels.
Tribune Newspapers
I used to have a rural fantasy. Then I started reading the Jack Reacher novels. True, plane rides are now less painful thanks to Lee Child's rough-and-tough hero, a former U.S. Army MP — but I'll never again be able to drive along the lonelier...

21. Into the Abyss

Werner Herzog gave us the interesting (but long) documentary Cave of Forgotten Dreams earlier this year. He did the interesting documentary Grizzly Man years ago.I enjoyed them more than his regular feature films, which usually have great scenes but are always disappointing (although it was nice to see San Diego in My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done?).

23. Death-defying magic of stories

It can't have been easy. Art supplies were not exactly thick on the ground in those days — we're talking 32,000 years ago, give or take — and there were lots of other things to worry about, such as finding food, water and shelter. Not mention outrunning ravenous beasts.
