5. TV Picks: 'Family Tree,' 'Nashville,' '10 Buildings,' 'The Middle'

"Family Tree" (HBO, premieres Sunday). Christopher Guest has made you a TV series. Thank him. The director of "A Mighty Wind" and "Best in Show" and one of the forces behind and in "This Is Spinal Tap" -- in which he was Nigel Tufnel, whose amplifier went to 11 and whose guitar you were not to touch or even to look at -- Guest has been an architect of modern comedy, from the improvised dialogue that marks his films to the documentary style in which most have been shot. Its sound is his sound, its look his look. (Ricky Gervais owes him his career, if we are to consider that career based on "The Office"; "Parks & Recreation" could almost be Guest's own work.) In the wonderful "Family Tree," hangdog Chris O'Dowd ("Bridesmaids," "The IT Crowd"), finding his life stalled after losing a girlfriend and a job in short order, goes in search of his roots and relatives. It's a trip that takes him into the theater, a boxing club, England's rural north, the back end of pantomime horse and finally to America. Michael McKean, a regular member of Guest's repertory company, plays Tom's father; Nina Conti his troubled ventriloquist sister. Jim Piddock, another Guest player, co-wrote the series and also appears in it, as Tom's antique-dealing downstairs neighbor. Familiar faces Fred Willard, Bob Balaban, Ed Begley Jr. and Amy Seimetz will also arrive in due time.

  7. TV review: 'Hemlock Grove' wallows in its own fake guts

Back when I was young and the world was new and only one kid we knew had a (very small, black-and-white) TV in his room, my cousins, my brother and I used to put on plays in the basement. We were big fans of "Night Stalker," so these were often quite violent plays, involving pentagrams, blood rituals and monsters constructed with whatever we had on hand — my mother's old hula skirt got a lot of use, as did her sheared raccoon coat, a ratty old "That Girl" wig and the fake blood we breathlessly purchased with Our Own Money from the back of comic books.

  17. Community gathers at the Last Bookstore

The staircase is narrow and creaky, with a bookshelf made from a 100-year-old harp case teetering on the precipice of collapse at the top of the landing. Overflowing with open books, pages wildly askew and dangling from uneven shelves, the bookcase looks as if it's escaped from a vintage cartoon.

  21. Connie Britton finds a true voice in 'Nashville'

After the indelible impression Connie Britton made as Tami Taylor, the über-capable and compassionate high school counselor and wife to a football coach on "Friday Night Lights," Britton ventured into the outlandish fun house of FX's "American Horror Story" — and received Emmy nominations for her work on both shows. This season, she's the pivot around which ABC's hit new drama "Nashville" revolves, playing Rayna James, a mid-career country music star battling to remake her place in a changing industry. Regardless of what role she plays, Britton comes across as strong and relatable; she's us, but with a hotter body. She took time out to speak with The Envelope by phone as she was pulling into work in Nashville on a recent afternoon.

If it came as something of a surprise to audiences that PBS period drama "Downton Abbey" won the Screen Actors Guild Award for ensemble in a drama series, it was positively a shock to the cast of the British period piece.
