1. 9/11: A tragedy explored through the decade by TV

NEW YORK (AP) — There was bold talk right after 9/11 that TV would emerge from this trauma sadder but wiser. That TV would be steeled with a higher sense of purpose than had characterized it the previous half-century.
NEW YORK (AP) — There was bold talk right after 9/11 that TV would emerge from this trauma sadder but wiser. That TV would be steeled with a higher sense of purpose than had characterized it the previous half-century. Baloney. Soon enough, the flow...

3. Television takes on 9/11 amid its 10th anniversary

Every once in a while, a fire truck will pass by Rudolph Giuliani's window, and the former New York mayor will flash back to that dreadful day when he had to drop everything and rush to ground zero. "It's just hard to hear it and not react," he said in an interview. "I don't know if that will ever change — some things will always trigger the memories."

7. The evolving images of 9/11

The first screening of "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" came just weeks after the attacks of Sept. 11. The movie had been in the works for years, the first in a trilogy based on novels that had been written decades earlier, of course, by an Englishman named J.R.R. Tolkien during Hitler's rise to power and World War II. And yet the first minute of the film delivered a queasy jolt of immediacy, a chill of recognition. It opened with no image, and very faint background music, little but a black screen and Cate Blanchett's mournful voice, reciting what sounded like, that autumn day, either a prayer or the most poetic 9/11 editorial no one had written yet:
