In the wake of two devastating storms that caused prolonged power outages last year, Gov.Dannel P. Malloyis proposing $7.5 million for improvements to the electric grid and other measures.
Malloy is asking the legislature to set aside $5 million to launch a pilot program to build electric micro-grids, which would serve city centers and other key facilities. Micro-grids are regional, small-scale power systems that can run independently of the larger electricity distribution system. They could help power clusters of prisons or medical units, for example, during a prolonged power outage in a larger area of the state.
Finally, Malloy is proposing a large-scale training exercise for emergency personnel. The drill would be conducted by Sept. 1. He is seeking $500,000 to fund it.
