3. Excerpt: 'The Book of My Lives' by Aleksandar Hemon

I do not know how old I was when I learned to play chess. I could not have been older than 8, because I still have a chess board on whose side my father inscribed, with a soldering iron, “Saša Hemon 1972.” I loved the board more than chess — it was one of the first things I owned. Its materiality was enchanting to me: the smell of burnt wood that lingered long after my father had branded it; the rattle of the thickly varnished pieces inside, the smacking sound they made when I set them down, the board's hollow wooden echo. I can even recall the taste — the queen's tip was pleasantly suckable; the pawns' round heads, not unlike nipples, were sweet. The board is at our old place in Sarajevo, and, even if I haven't played a game on it in decades, it is still my most cherished possession, providing incontrovertible evidence that there once lived a boy who used to be me.

  5. Why Mental Health Screening Of Gun Buyers Is No Answer

The horrific mass murder of children and school personnel in Newtown prompted calls for more screening of gun buyers to identify the mentally ill and prevent or restrict purchases of weapons and ammunition. This simplistic, impractical and unfair proposal wrongly stigmatizes a large (and constantly shifting) group of our fellow citizens, without adequately addressing the underlying dangers of loosely regulated guns.

  11. 'Spring Breakers' is one big disorienting party

It remains to be seen whether "Spring Breakers" turns out to be one of the movies of the year, but it is without question a movie of its moment. It has been a source of intense interest since shooting first started around St. Pete Beach in Florida last spring, as images began to surface via paparazzi and social media of young starlets Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Benson.

  23. Rejecting 31,000 gun deaths as a fact of life

There are so many violent tragedies every day — I'm thinking specifically about the deaths of young people, and particularly those by gun — it's impossible to process it all, much less give our hearts to it. If we tried, our heads would burst.
