1. What the heat really does to your body

People can sometimes look healthier in hot weather when their skin 'glows'. That's because the blood vessels dilate and the heart pumps more blood to the skin to cool it. The more blood is pumped to the skin, the more heat we can get rid of, rather like the way a car radiator loses heat from an engine.

3. 'Scootie' Will Take Us Where We Need To Go

The Hartford Courant
We need to talk about Scootie. Scootie is the name I suggested, roughly 12 years ago, for the Hartford to New Britain busway, and like so many of my brilliant ideas, it was ignored. Scootie was a good name because (a) who could hate something named...

13. Wednesday's Child: Brenton 10/17

Even though he's just a toddler, that doesn't mean Brenton doesn't have a king-size personality! He is very social and likes to play and watch other kids. His favorite games are peek-a-boo and patty cake. He is a cuddle bug, so get ready to give lots of hugs. Brenton is currently benefitting from physical, speech and occupational therapies. He utilizes an eye patch, a stander, a gait trainer, knee immobilizers and ankle-foot orthotics. It is expected that he will need assistance as an adult, but he can have a great life! His caseworker would like to see Brenton in a two-parent home with at least one stay-at-home parent, due to his daily needs; however, all types of families will be considered. A smoke-free home is necessary. Financial assistance may be available for adoption-related services. This is a LEGAL RISK ADOPTIVE PLACEMENT. In a legal risk placement, it is expected that the family will eventually adopt the child, even though the birth parents' rights have not been fully terminated at the time of placement. To learn more about Brenton, contact The Adoption Exchange at 800-554-2222.

15. Wizards' Wall can only wait to return to lineup

Shirtless, John Wall crouched and dribbled a basketball above his head with his right hand and another low to the ground with his left hand. Unable to keep the routine together as he reached half-court, Wall grunted as he lost control, started over, and tried the exercise once again.

17. At least this debate would have been lively

While still digesting the vice presidential debate, let's go back to the last Presidential debate between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. Lets recast it as a Hollywood movie -- a Frank Capra film we'll call "Mr. Obama Wants to Stay in Washington."...

19. Daum: Naomi Wolf's vaginal sideshow

It's a strange time to be a woman. I say this not because state legislatures enacted no less than 95 restrictions on reproductive rights this year. I say it not because at the same time, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker repealed his state's equal pay law and Wisconsin state Sen. Glenn Grothman conjectured that "money is more important for men." Or because, just last month, an alarming number of male legislators demonstrated serious confusion about the birds and the bees.

Welcome to the end of the road. If you're going to Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, it stops here, near the tip of a long, skinny peninsula about 100 miles south of Cancun. Scrub jungle encroaches on the village, fishermen wait for the opening of lobster...
