When Orange Coast College hired Tom Murphine in 1985 as a journalism professor, I winced. He'll scare students away! I'd seen "Murph" at work in the Daily Pilot newsroom. With rolled up sleeves, a no-nonsense demeanor and smoldering pipe jutting from...

  3. Why the New York Jets can win in Pittsburgh

    1. Just because the Pittsburgh Steelers have home field in Sunday’s AFC Championship Game game against the New York Jets doesn't mean they have an advantage. For starters, the Jets went into Pittsburgh and won 22-17 on Dec. 19 in a game that went down to the last play. Secondly, road teams are 5-3 in these upside-down playoffs, and the Packers — seeded sixth, like the Jets — have a great shot to win at Chicago for the NFC title as well.

  11. Jasmin & Joshua

I write this story to you from Houston Texas. The actual tale of love that involves Jasmin and I all came to be in Huntington beach California. After serving 5 years in the United States Marine Corps I became wounded and was transferred to San Diego Veterans Hospital. My jaw was broken in three places and the doctor had to wire it shut for at least 3 months. I could not eat sleep or breath and it was quiet possibly the most traumatic experience of my life. Three months in a hospital bed as doctors monitored my weight and jaw became a very difficult task. To add to pain, two of my very good friends had died in Iraq and was unable to attend their funeral. It was a very dark point in my life.
Two months into my recovery, I logged onto my Myspace account and noticed in the corner of the website 5 people whom I did not know but Tom ( the creator of Myspace) kept insisting that I might know them. After several attempts at ignoring it I started to become curious and noticed an amazingly beautiful woman. I clicked on her profile and wrote something funny and added that we might have a mutual friend since Myspace says we might know each other. A few days passed and she wrote back with a snide reply. She told me she was from Houston and her life story. We exchanged messages for a few weeks and and finally gave each other phone calls. It was difficult for her and myself to talk on the phone considering my jaw was wired shut in 256 places. I mumbled as much as I could and she was not afraid to ask me to keep repeating myself. I was just happy that I had someone to talk to.
