Cynthia Anne Maier, 54, passed away Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, at George Washington University Hospital. She had been hospitalized for treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia, which she had been struggling against for 16 years.
Born July 6, 1958, in Montclair, N.J., Cynthia was the daughter of Frank T. Penn and Helaine Wilson Penn.
She graduated in 1980 from Cedar Crest College with a B.S. in microbiology, and has worked in her chosen field since then.
Cynthia worked in clinical microbiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and also at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair. She was also employed in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries with positions at Smith-Kline Beecham, Organon, Amgen, and her last position at Medimmune in Gaithersburg, Md.
Cynthia was married to Lawrence J. Maier on Oct. 2, 1993, in Montclair. Since their marriage, she has lived in several states, with a large collection of new friends from each. Cynthia was a warm and caring person who made lasting friendships wherever she went. She was very engaged in her chosen field as a microbiologist, and was always striving to increase her education. She was also an accomplished baker, and was highly regarded for her cakes and baked goods.
Cynthia was diagnosed in June 1996 with lymphoma, but continued on with her life despite all of the medical treatments and limitations imposed on her. She rode in multiple organized bicycle events, raising money for the American Diabetes Association and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Through all her years of treatments and hospitalizations, she remained positive, and downplayed her medical issues. She will be greatly missed by all those she left behind.
She is survived by her husband, Lawrence J. Maier; parents, Frank T. Penn and Helaine Wilson Penn of Montclair; and her maternal grandmother, Evia Duton, of Montclair.
She was preceded in death by her older brother, Maurice Penn.
