Greetings, neighbors

Operation Christmas Child

Girl Scouts from Troops 40169 and 40708 helped volunteers fill more than 200 shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. (Submitted photo / January 7, 2013)

Welcome to 2013. I sure hope it is a healthy, happy, prosperous one for you and for our little town.

Hi, Meemaw

As a special request this week, here is a shout out: Hi, Meemaw. In explanation, I do not have a meemaw.

My grandparents have long since died, but in our wonderful community, genetic connection is not important. We manage to find ways to love and care for each other without familial relation. Someone else’s meemaw has chosen to care about me. What a blessing.

Girl Scouts help others

Girl Scout Troops 40169 and 40708, led by Jeannette Ebersole, helped other volunteers fill more than 200 shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child.

The girls made a donation of toothbrushes and T-shirts by using money from last year’s cookie sales.

The boxes joined the 1,628 boxes filled by the volunteers at Good Shepherd, which then joined the 3 million boxes processed at the Charlotte, N.C., warehouse. The shoe boxes are shipped all around the world bringing gifts and the message of Jesus’ love as part of Samaritan’s Purse.

Green Fest news

Vendor applications for Green Fest started being accepted Jan 1.

The fifth annual event is set for Saturday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Shafer Memorial Park.

Organizers expect the number of vendors will surpass last year’s record total of 142, as the number of vendors has increased every year since 2009, when 85 registered for the inaugural event.

“We will not be surprised to see in excess of 150 vendors,” said Janeen Solberg, coordinator of vendors. “The Green Fest has become Boonsboro’s signature single-day, spring event in a very short period of time.” She added that Green Fest in the spring and Boonesborough Days in the fall “bookend a very busy time each year for our beautiful park.”

Individuals, businesses, nonprofit organizations and other groups wishing to sell products and services or impart information about Earth-friendly products, services or causes can apply online at www.boonsborogreenfest.com.

The registration fee is $20 for a 10-foot-square space.

The application deadline for vendors is April 1, and space is limited.

For more information, call Solberg at 301-416-2750 or go to www.boonsborogreenfest.com.

Recycling computers

On Monday, Jan. 21, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr., Volunteer Washington County is hosting an E-Recycle event.

The Boonsboro community is invited to help care for the community by e-recycling.

There will be a truck in the Boonsboro High School parking lot off Md. 66 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. to collect computers, laptops, computer keyboards, mice, speakers, computer monitors, printers, scanners, copiers, toner and ink cartridges, Fax machines, plotters, cell phones, LCD projectors, VCRs, DVD and CD players, stereo and audio equipment, cables and cords, microwave ovens and TVs (no larger than 32 inches and not in wood cabinets).

This is a great time to clean out your old technology without filling up the landfill.

Book discussion

Turn the Page Book Club invites readers to its monthly meetings on the second Wednesday of each month at 1 p.m.

On Wednesday, the group will discuss “The Kitchen House” by Kathleen Grissom.

The snow policy follows that of the Washington County Public Schools system. If schools are on a delay, meetings will still be held. If school is canceled, so is the book club.

Turn the Page Bookstore is at 18 N. Main St. in Boonsboro.
